DEFINATELY BUY YOGI'S MAPS RESUPPLY CARDS ETC...

Halfmile's PCT app: This one pretty much every hiker had who had a smartphone. It is good for quickly figuring out where your destination will be over the next day or two. It also lists water sources.
Guthook's PCT apps: These were good to have also. It is more or less the same as the Halfmile app, but in visual form. There were a couple times where I mindlessly took the wrong trail and something didn't seem right. Taking my phone out of airplane mode and seeing a blue dot in the middle of nowhere was good to know, but also made a lot of foul language come out of my mouth.
PCTHYOH: This made it easy to download the PDFs of Halfmile's maps and trail notes. I was previously downloading them and using iBooks but PCTHYOH was a bit easier.

The smartphone+bluetooth keyboard combination worked extremely well for journal keeping. I could type really fast and get down whatever thoughts I had in my head. Journaling- To write legibly is very time consuming and tedious on muscles.

Keeping a daily journal is very important. I WILL forget all the little details and things experienced both inside and outside of MY head. While I hike I WILL jot down random notes on Notepad in my phone throughout the day. The notes will be things I see or thought about as they happen. At the end of a day my notes might read like: up late...sick of granola, ate rice and Snickers for breakfast...naked couple making out, photos, awkward...story from 12th grade about RISK game...idea about saving up money and going away...thinking about couple from this morning, actually not awkward...kinda awesome instead...did math...turn in early, try again tomorrow...

Spitler Trail Junction.
-----
Many thru-hikers reach the San Jacinto Mountains early in the hiking season
when snow and ice still cover parts of the trail. In 2005 a PCT hiker died in the
San Jacinto's following a snowstorm. Snow often begins on the north side of
Apache Peak (mile 169.5) and continues 21 miles through Fuller Ridge. If you
reach Apache Peak and are uneasy traveling north you can backtrack 1 mile
to the Spitler Peak Trail and hike the Spitler to Idyllwild Alternate shown in the
back of this section of Halfmile's maps. Snow melts quickly, so trail reports
more than a few days old may not be accurate following warm weather.

Mile Description Waypoint Elev Map
Halfmile's Pacific Crest Trail Notes - Ashland, OR to Manning Park, BC
Dutton Creek trail junction, PCT Crater Lake Rim alternate route via Rim
Village and spectacular Crater Lake Rim. Dutton Camp nearby.
----------
A route along the Crater Lake Rim (the purple line on these maps) is a highly
recommended 11.7 mile alternate route that bypasses 16.2 miles of the
official PCT.
A few years ago, both routes were signed as the PCT and sometimes called
the "Hiker PCT" and "Equestrian PCT". As of 2014 all PCT signs have been
removed from Rim Trail which is now clearly an alternate to the official PCT.
Three different trails combine to form the Crater Lake Rim Alternate.
1) At PCT mile 1820.5 follow the Dutton Creek Trail 2.3 miles to the Rim
Village.
2) From the Rim Village follow the Discovery Point Trail 1.2 miles to the Rim
Trail.
3) Follow the Rim Trail 8.2 miles and rejoin the PCT at mile 1836.7.
----------
Camping restrictions are strictly enforced in Crater Lake National Park.
Essentially, you have to be a mile from a road to disperse camp (which can
sometime be difficult to know when on the PCT). Camping is not allowed
along the Rim Alternate except at the Lightning Spring Camp and the Grouse
Hill Camp.

Plan Considerations:
If you are planning a longer hike, the plan above might be incredibly accurate or completely off. You might find that after a month of hiking your pace will change. You might find out that you are a Secret Superman (or Wonder Woman) and are knocking out a lot more miles per day than you planned. On the downside, a forest fire might add a +10 mile detour or a sore foot might cause you to spend a few extra days in a town.

Disclaimer: all calculations and data are believed to be correct but are not guaranteed.
Please double check the calculations and trail/resupply data before starting a hike.
